The vehicle data logger project involved the development of a complete, integrated software system including:

The final product provides vehicle data loggers which monitor a vehicle's operation. The loggers are installed on a wide range of vehicles including police cars and fire engines. They record speed, rpm and other features of the vehicle (such as indicators, brakes, ABS operation, blue light use) including fuel consumption. The data is stored within the logger and transferred onto a Compact FLASH card. The data logger is based on a Hitachi SH processor. Claritech Ltd developed the data logger hardware (PCB design and prototype build), software for the embedded system, Palm Pilot and Windows CE software for calibration and installation and PC software for viewing data and generating reports. We also supported the first installations on vehicles to ensure that the installation and calibration process was completed successfully. In order to check that the data logger is operating correctly within a vehicle, the installation engineer uses a calibration tool. Two calibration tools are available, one using a Palm Pilot and the other a Windows CE device. The Windows CE device provides greater functionality at a higher price. Claritech Ltd developed the software for both the Palm Pilot and the Windows CE devices. The Fleet Manager or Accident Investigator loads the data from the Compact FLASH card (or over the GSM network) and uses the custom PC software to view the vehicle's activity. The PC software was developed using Microsoft Visual C++ and used a Jet Database to store the underlying vehicle and driver information. The development work was completed on a "shared risk" basis so Claritech Ltd retains the design rights on the data logger and the copyright on the software but we supply the hardware and software to our customer at a price that we agreed at the start of the project (see Development Options).
