We developed two vehicle data logger models for a customer. The data loggers collect data about how the vehicle is being used and transfer the data onto a compact FLASH card. The data can then be read by a PC running custom software.

The data logger collects data during a journey. It measures a number of inputs including:

• Vehicle Speed
• Vehicle Rpm
• Up to 18 digital inputs (for example indicators, lights, blue lights)
• Up to 8 analog inputs
• Fuel consumption
• Signals from an optional GPS module
• Signals from optional accelerometers for detecting accidents
• Signals from an optional driver identification system using Dallas iButtons

One set of source code was used to generate the executable image for both models of data logger. The software was written mainly in C and used our own real-time kernel to ensure that the correct task was running on the processor at any time.

The loggers have two RS485 serial ports. One serial port is used for the optional GPS module while the other can be used to collect data (optionally via an add-on GSM module) and for calibrating the logger (see Windows CE Software and Palm Pilot Software).

The loggers are now fitted to emergency service (Police, Fire and Ambulance), bus and public service vehicles around the UK.
